The fifth UK Costume Symposium will present three days of talks and workshops by leading costume specialists from major film and television productions, at Nottingham Trent University from 6 – 8 September 2024.
The Costume Symposium is run by Susannah Buxton (award-winning costume designer for film and television) and Mary Davies (film lecturer and event organiser) to promote costume making and the associated skills vital to theatre, opera, film and television, and bring together designers, makers and costume students from across the country to exchange ideas, learn from experienced practitioners in the field and celebrate their art.
Keynote speaker for the Talks day (Friday 6 September) will be Caroline McCall, a BAFTA and Emmy award winning costume designer best known for her work on Downton Abbey (2010) and His Dark Materials (2019).
Also speaking will be costume maker Jane Law, who works with a small team producing costumes for high profile international productions with some of the world’s most talented costume designers. Recent projects include Mission Impossible 5, Alice Through the Looking Glass Cinderella, Jupiter Ascending, Kate Bush: Before the Dawn and Mad Max: Fury Road.
The Talks day will also feature a demonstration, Creating Drama: Deconstructing Period Costume and a panel discussion in which tailors, costumiers, costume cutters and makers will talk about how they started out in the industry.
Two days of practical workshops (Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 September) will be led by Sean Barrett (Millinery), Gillian Carew (Men’s Period Tailoring) , Michele Carragher (Embroidery Embellishment), Enda Kenny (Dyeing and Enhancement), Kunza (Corsetry), Riina Oun (Handmade Gloves), with a new tutor and workshop this year: Lucy Sturley (Costume Making for Stop Motion Animation). The workshops offer an unrivalled opportunity for makers to develop their skills.
The symposium will run from 9.00am to 5.30pm each day. A sandwich lunch and tea and cake will be provided on Friday 6 September.
Registration - participant fees
We are offering costume students (BA and MA) a 10% discount on the regular rate for participant fees.
Participants in the workshops will attend one workshop running across two days.
